South Carolina Medical Detox

Medical detox is often a critical starting point for addiction treatment. While Hammocks on the Edisto does not offer detox on-site, we work closely with trusted referral partners in our area who can help you safely begin your recovery journey. Once detox is complete, our residential program is here to support the next phase of healing. Read on to learn more about what medical detox involves and what to expect.

What Is Medical Detox?

Medical detox, or medically supervised detoxification, is the process of safely clearing drugs or alcohol from the body under the care of licensed medical professionals. When someone who has been using a substance regularly stops, the body reacts — sometimes mildly, sometimes severely. Medical detox is designed to manage those withdrawal symptoms, keep the person stable and comfortable, and lay the groundwork for ongoing treatment.

It is important to understand that detox is not the same as addiction treatment. Detox addresses the physical dependence on a substance. The emotional, behavioral, and psychological work of recovery typically begins after detox, in a program like residential or outpatient treatment.

A way to heal addiction

Why Medical Supervision Matters During Detox

Attempting to detox alone — sometimes called “quitting cold turkey” — can be uncomfortable, discouraging, and in some cases dangerous. Withdrawal from substances like alcohol and benzodiazepines can be life-threatening without medical oversight. Even withdrawal from substances that are not physically dangerous can be intense enough to drive a person back to using before they have the chance to begin real recovery.

A medical detox setting provides:

  • 24/7 medical monitoring to track vital signs and respond quickly if complications arise.
  • Medication-assisted support when appropriate, to ease withdrawal symptoms and cravings.
  • A safe, substance-free environment that removes access to the substance and reduces the risk of relapse during the most vulnerable window.
  • Emotional support from staff who understand withdrawal and can help the person feel less alone during a difficult time.
  • A bridge to the next step so that the work of recovery can continue once the body is stable.

Substances That Typically Require Medical Detox

Not every substance produces the same kind of withdrawal, and not every person needs the same level of care. That said, medical detox is generally recommended and often essential for the following:

  • Alcohol: Alcohol withdrawal can range from mild tremors and anxiety to seizures and delirium tremens (DTs). Medical detox is strongly recommended for anyone with a history of heavy or long-term alcohol use.
  • Benzodiazepines: Withdrawal from benzos (such as Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan, or Valium) can be medically dangerous and typically requires a slow, supervised taper.
  • Opioids: While opioid withdrawal is rarely fatal in otherwise healthy adults, it is intensely uncomfortable. Medical detox makes the process more tolerable and significantly reduces the risk of immediate relapse and overdose.
  • Stimulants: Withdrawal from cocaine, methamphetamine, or prescription stimulants like Adderall is usually less physically dangerous but can bring on severe depression, fatigue, and cravings. A supervised setting helps protect against early relapse.
  • Multiple Substance Use: When a person has been using more than one substance, withdrawal patterns become harder to predict. Medical detox is almost always the safest path forward.

  • Yoga and Meditation — supporting physical relaxation and mental clarity.
  • Creative and Expressive Arts — such as writing, art, and movement, to explore emotions and build self-expression.
  • Wellness Coaching — guiding residents toward balanced nutrition, sleep, and lifestyle habits.
  • Nature-Based Activities — enjoy outdoor walks, horticulture, and recreation on our private grounds.
  • Recreational Enrichment — including fire-pit gatherings, birdwatching, and mindful outdoor experiences.

Chef-prepared, balanced meals are part of your daily routine, underscoring our belief that nutrition plays a vital role in healing. By enjoying wholesome food in the community, residents reinforce their physical health while building connections that weave throughout all aspects of our treatment program.

Gender-Responsive, Trauma-Aware Care

Addiction affects women differently, from societal expectations to personal trauma and physiological factors. Hammocks on the Edisto’s gender-specific model honors these differences. Our programs are structured to explore emotional pain, relational dynamics, self-esteem challenges, and trauma in a safe, empathetic space with clinicians experienced in women’s care.

We help each woman build resilience, self-compassion, and coping skills. Group therapy creates supportive connections and reminds residents they are not alone, while individual counseling nurtures deep healing. Family sessions rebuild relationships and communication, easing the transition after residential care.

Comprehensive Support and Aftercare Planning

True recovery isn’t just about days in treatment — it’s about long-term growth and sustainable change. At Hammocks on the Edisto, discharge planning and aftercare start on day one. Our clinical team works with each woman to develop a personalized aftercare plan that may include continued therapy, support groups, sober living, and wellness activities.

We incorporate relapse prevention, life-skills education, and continuity of care to support a confident return to daily life. Our programs emphasize accountability and resilience and provide tools for lasting sobriety, seamlessly connecting in-depth support with residents’ ongoing journeys.

A Community of Support and Sisterhood

One of the most transformative parts of our program is the community that forms among residents, supported by comprehensive treatment, aftercare, and wellness. Healing grows when women share stories, challenges, victories, and hopes with those who understand. This sisterhood fosters encouragement, accountability, and affirmation, creating bonds that often last long after treatment ends.

Whether celebrating milestones, joining group activities, or enjoying a quiet moment on the porch, our supportive environment at Hammocks fosters growth, connection, and empowerment.
