How Does Depression Impact Women?

Major depression is more prevalent in women than men. Depression, both in men and women, can cause physical, mental, and emotional strain, which inevitably impacts one’s quality of life. However, there’s no denying there are gender-specific implications for how depression impacts women vs men. This is why we offer women’s depression treatment in South Carolina to provide tailored treatment to treat your depression symptoms.

One way depression impacts women is mothers suffering from depression may feel less inclined to seek women’s depression treatment for fear of being perceived as a “bad mother.” However, not effectively treating your depression symptoms only worsens your depression which can impact your personal and professional relationships long term.

Many women who struggle with depression also struggle with other mental health conditions, such as anxiety disorder or an eating disorder. Not effectively treating all mental health conditions runs the risk of exacerbating both a woman’s depression symptoms and her other mental health symptoms.

Depression can significantly reduce a woman’s quality of life for the worse. Depression negatively affects a woman’s mental health and well-being and can also negatively impact her personal and professional relationships with friends, family, coworkers, and more. At Hammocks on the Edisto, we offer women’s depression treatment in South Carolina so you can improve your depression symptoms.

Symptoms of Depression

If you’re wondering if you need depression treatment, it’s important to first look at the signs of depression in women. Feeling sad is a normal response to difficult situations. However, feeling sad or hopeless for over two weeks often can indicate that the patient is experiencing some form of depression. Depression can be challenging to identify because it can be a disorder all on its own or a symptom of another issue, such as bipolar disorder. Grief can often be mistaken as depression.

Typical symptoms of depression include:

  • Overpowering feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or pessimism
  • Irritability
  • Constant daydreaming
  • Poor hygiene
  • Loss of interest in doing activities once enjoyed
  • Lack of energy
  • Unable to sleep
  • Oversleeping
  • Digestive problems
  • Suicidal thoughts

Finding the right treatment for depression is vital, especially if someone is using drugs or alcohol to cope with the symptoms.

How to Treat Depression in Women

There is no “one-size-fits-all” approach when it comes to treating depression. That being said, there are varying types of treatment available, from medications to psychotherapy. At our drug rehab in South Carolina, women can find real help.

If you are suffering from depression, we offer women’s depression treatment in South Carolina to help you safely and effectively treat your depression symptoms. Below are some common methods our South Carolina depression treatment for women can help you with to better manage your depression symptoms.

Medications

While there’s no cure for depression, medications can work to treat your depression symptoms effectively. There are a variety of medicines for depression, including:

  • Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI)
  • Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRI)
  • Tricyclic and Tetracyclic Antidepressants
  • Atypical Antidepressants
  • Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
  • N-methyl D-aspartate (NMDA) Antagonist

Your doctor will carefully review your medical history to determine which medication may be right for you. It’s also important to note that each person reacts differently to medications. Therefore, you may need to be prescribed and try different medicines prior to finding a medication that works best for you.

Psychotherapy

Several different types of psychotherapy can be used to treat depression. Depending on the type of depression you have and the severity of your depression symptoms can impact which form of psychotherapy may be suited for you.

Below are some common types of therapy for depression:

Cognitive Therapy

Cognitive therapy involves learning to control your emotions by better understanding and handling your thoughts. For instance, constant negative thought patterns can worsen depression symptoms. In cognitive therapy, one can learn to identify negative thought patterns to then be able to

  1. recognize when their negative thought pattern is occurring
  2. stop the loop when it is occurring

Behavioral Therapy

Behavioral therapy involves changing certain behaviors that may lead to negative emotions. For example, this may involve behavioral activation, which has the individual do certain activities to identify and work towards enhancing their coping skills. This helps build confidence and accomplishment by working to engage in certain activities successfully that you may have in the past been scared of doing.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) combines cognitive and behavioral therapy strategies to effectively treat your depression. Therefore, CBT helps you recognize your negative thought patterns and helps you engage in activities to help your depression symptoms better. This may include journaling every day, meditating, exercising, etc.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) is similar to CBT; however, DBT encourages individuals to be aware and accept their negative thoughts, patterns, and behaviors that may exacerbate their depression symptoms.

Therefore, DBT looks to recognize and accept your negative thoughts and then learn new coping strategies to improve your depression symptoms. Mindfulness meditation is a typical example of DBT that teaches individuals to be aware of potential negative thoughts and prevent them from escalating further.

Treating Depression When It Co-Occurs With Addiction

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America¹, close to 16.1 million American adults have Major Depressive Disorder, one of the most common forms of depression. Unfortunately, at the same time, there are close to 9 million adults who had a substance use disorder and co-occurring mental illness, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.² It’s necessary to address co-occurring conditions simultaneously to prevent one from returning to use after treatment.

At Hammocks on the Edisto, we don’t offer traditional dual diagnosis treatment. However, we do offer substance use treatment that can address the concerns of those with depression. We also can recommend further treatment for depression outside of our treatment program.

In the end, the programs at our women’s depression treatment center in South Carolina is specifically tailored around the needs of our residents.

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy
  • Dialectical behavior therapy
  • Yoga therapy
  • Nutritional therapy
  • Holistic therapy

We’re committed to providing healing for the residents in our treatment program. To learn about our services, please find treatment at Hammocks on the Edisto today at 833.793.0191.

The Hammocks is a wonderful and life changing place. Everyone working here is warm, welcoming, and helpful. The Clinical staff is truly exceptional. I am going home a mentally healthy person looking forward to a happy & meaningful life.

Alli O.

This facility is like no other. Every Staff member was knowledgeable and friendly. Being a small group (15 max), I formed a bond with the other residents like I had never experienced before. This place saved my life.

Jill J.

Hammocks is truly a special place. Everything from the staff, therapists, activities, food, location/view/house, resources etc. were top-notch. I had an incredible experience and highly recommend this spot. 10/10.

Darcy W.

The most incredible treatment facility ever! They offer a holistic approach centered in therapy, science, and female empowerment. Eric, Sarah, Jonas, Katie, and all of the other staff offer a level of compassion that I’ve never seen before in any treatment facility. And that says a lot coming from a child of two addicts who have been in and out of facilities my entire life. They are always available and respond quickly to any questions or discussions you may bring up. The family groups were amazing and I miss them every week. They truly care and believe that recovery is possible for all!

Rhapsody C.

My wife spent a month at the Hammocks and I have nothing but incredible things to say about the facility. The help and therapy she received has truly been life changing for our family. From the day I called to discuss admission, Jonas, the director, made himself immediately available to any questions or concerns I had. Throughout her stay, I participated in multiple family sessions a week with Sarah or Eric who were both excellent. They were kind and accepting, but also thought-provoking and challenging. Not to mention, the whole facility is absolutely beautiful. I would highly recommend the Hammocks to any family in need of a recovery center.

Erica U.

This facility has absolutely saved my life. It is secluded, peaceful, beautiful, and a lovely gone environment that makes external and internal healing much easier to tackle. Being away from family and doing the intense work needed for recovery is hard enough in any environment but the Hammocks makes you feel like you are nothing shy of family. You are treated with respect and kindness, and your needs are listened to and accommodated and the staff is so loving and supportive.

Krista B.

As a therapist at Hammocks on the Edisto, I am so proud to be a part of this great team of caring professionals. Being directly involved in the process of change for our clients is a honor. The facility is beautiful and inviting and provides a healthy environment for our residents to thrive. The programming is like nothing I’ve been part of before. From our comprehensive and diverse group sessions, the wellness and yoga component, our individual therapy, medical and nursing care, nutrition and on site chef, and a great team of recovery associates, we collectively provide a great recovery experience.

Eric H.

Hammocks on the Edisto is a dream come true in so many ways. This is a unique place where women can progress on their journey to recovery surrounded by the beauty of the South Carolina Lowcountry and supported by a team of compassionate expert providers. Offerings beyond talk therapy include yoga, cooking demonstrations, adventures to local parks and beaches, and wellness coaching. The facility is never over crowded and each woman gets lots of personalized care. The healing potential is felt as soon as you drive down the long private driveway to the house. Highly recommend.

Kate A.

H. G.

My stay here at Hammocks has been life changing. I will never forget all of the staff and women here who have made my journey successful. Without all of you I would still be broken. Love to all.

Tracey

My time at the Hammocks was an absolute blessing and saved my life. This magical place on the water is beautiful, safe, and peaceful. I have made lifelong connections and relationships with all of the strong women I have met here. From the counselors and therapists, to the chef and housekeeping, Hammocks allowed me to really get vulnerable while making me feel right at home. I will always remember the amazing and calming energy, from the moment I walked through the door and will always utilize the life changing tools that were given to me during my stay.
