Introduction to Yogaand Meditation
When our residents come to Hammocks on the Edisto, they may be suffering. They may have experienced some form of trauma, or they may have a mental health condition that is contributing to their substance use issues. In such cases, a women’s wellness program is ideal. From the time that residents enter our program, they know that our team cares for them. Our residents have the opportunity to stay in one of our beautifully decorated semi-private rooms. However, the wellness experience doesn’t end after the women store their belongings. We also offer a range of opportunities to engage in holistic wellness.
Yoga and Meditation in Charleston, South Carolina
Hammocks on the Edisto will weave together the philosophy and practices of yoga with the guiding principles of the 12-step program to create a centered mind and body sobriety approach. The word yoga translates to “union.” Uniting the mind and the body through a series of postures synced to the breath to create a deep connection to yourself, your sobriety, and the world around you.
We offer six distinct types of yoga at Hammocks on the Edisto. These practices include:
- Hatha yoga involves holding postures, breathing techniques, purification techniques, and energy regulation techniques. Hatha yoga teaches you how to feel and change the energy in your body while creating a deep level of self-awareness.
- Vinyasa yoga is a faster-paced sequence of postures that residents sync to their breathing. Each pose is linked together to create a “flow” of seamless transition of breath and movement. Vinyasa combines strength, focus, flexibility, and balance to increase your heart rate while creating a calming emotional state.
- Yin yoga is a quiet and slow-paced style of yoga that includes holding each posture for a longer period of time. Yin is designed to access the tissues beneath the muscles. This type of yoga targets the connective tissues, fascia, ligaments, joints, and bones. Yin is a more meditative practice allowing you to turn your attention inward, allowing you to safely focus on your mind and the physical sensations of your body.
- Yoga Nidra translates to yogic sleep. Yoga Nidra is a heavily guided meditation designed to help relieve stress and guide you into a deep state of relaxation.
- Pranayama is the practice of breath regulation. There are many breathing techniques, strategies, and exercises that can be used to activate the parasympathetic nervous system in order to calm the body and create clarity in the resident’s mind.
- Meditation is a set of techniques that are intended to encourage a heightened state of awareness and focused attention.

A way to heal addiction
How Does Yoga Therapy Help Heal Addiction?
Our Certified Yoga Instructor has been certified by Yoga 4 Sobriety. This is a unique certification that combines the 12-Step Program with our own 7 chakras. Yoga is a way to improve the mental condition, but it has so many more applications, including:
- Stress relief
- Improvements in sleep quality
- Reduction in fatigue
- Increase in stamina
- Elevation of mood
- Improved self-esteem
Through yoga therapy and mental health treatment, patients may find the self-control and discipline to overcome substance use disorder involving drugs or alcohol.
Additionally, we recognize that recovery from addiction is often a life-long process. Therefore, we teach yoga to ensure that our residents have the tools to manage their cravings and temptations outside of treatment. With the help of yoga, many of our residents have the opportunity to stay sober and healthy as they finish treatment.

This facility is like no other. Every Staff member was knowledgeable and friendly. Being a small group (15 max), I formed a bond with the other residents like I had never experienced before. This place saved my life.

Hammocks is truly a special place. Everything from the staff, therapists, activities, food, location/view/house, resources etc. were top-notch. I had an incredible experience and highly recommend this spot. 10/10.

The most incredible treatment facility ever! They offer a holistic approach centered in therapy, science, and female empowerment. Eric, Sarah, Jonas, Katie, and all of the other staff offer a level of compassion that I’ve never seen before in any treatment facility. And that says a lot coming from a child of two addicts who have been in and out of facilities my entire life. They are always available and respond quickly to any questions or discussions you may bring up. The family groups were amazing and I miss them every week. They truly care and believe that recovery is possible for all!
Rhapsody C.
My wife spent a month at the Hammocks and I have nothing but incredible things to say about the facility. The help and therapy she received has truly been life changing for our family. From the day I called to discuss admission, Jonas, the director, made himself immediately available to any questions or concerns I had. Throughout her stay, I participated in multiple family sessions a week with Sarah or Eric who were both excellent. They were kind and accepting, but also thought-provoking and challenging. Not to mention, the whole facility is absolutely beautiful. I would highly recommend the Hammocks to any family in need of a recovery center.

This facility has absolutely saved my life. It is secluded, peaceful, beautiful, and a lovely gone environment that makes external and internal healing much easier to tackle. Being away from family and doing the intense work needed for recovery is hard enough in any environment but the Hammocks makes you feel like you are nothing shy of family. You are treated with respect and kindness, and your needs are listened to and accommodated and the staff is so loving and supportive.

As a therapist at Hammocks on the Edisto, I am so proud to be a part of this great team of caring professionals. Being directly involved in the process of change for our clients is a honor. The facility is beautiful and inviting and provides a healthy environment for our residents to thrive. The programming is like nothing I’ve been part of before. From our comprehensive and diverse group sessions, the wellness and yoga component, our individual therapy, medical and nursing care, nutrition and on site chef, and a great team of recovery associates, we collectively provide a great recovery experience.

Hammocks on the Edisto is a dream come true in so many ways. This is a unique place where women can progress on their journey to recovery surrounded by the beauty of the South Carolina Lowcountry and supported by a team of compassionate expert providers. Offerings beyond talk therapy include yoga, cooking demonstrations, adventures to local parks and beaches, and wellness coaching. The facility is never over crowded and each woman gets lots of personalized care. The healing potential is felt as soon as you drive down the long private driveway to the house. Highly recommend.

My stay here at Hammocks has been life changing. I will never forget all of the staff and women here who have made my journey successful. Without all of you I would still be broken. Love to all.
Tracey
My time at the Hammocks was an absolute blessing and saved my life. This magical place on the water is beautiful, safe, and peaceful. I have made lifelong connections and relationships with all of the strong women I have met here. From the counselors and therapists, to the chef and housekeeping, Hammocks allowed me to really get vulnerable while making me feel right at home. I will always remember the amazing and calming energy, from the moment I walked through the door and will always utilize the life changing tools that were given to me during my stay. Hammocks has changed my outlook on life and has me excited to see what the future holds for my recovery!
