Trauma-Informed Care for Women
According to the American Psychological Association, approximately 50% of individuals in inpatient recovery for addiction also meet the diagnostic criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder.1 And there is little question that this number is significantly higher when one takes into account patients in outpatient care or who are not in recovery. What is rarely considered, however, is that women who have undergone a traumatic event have unique needs that cannot be adequately addressed in a co-ed environment; they instead require the help of women’s addiction therapy programs.
To provide women with the best treatment for PTSD and other mental health concerns brought on by past or recent trauma, enrolling in women’s trauma recovery programs can give women the help they need to overcome their addiction and past traumatic events.
At Hammocks on the Edisto, we offer a women’s trauma treatment program that is tailored to meet the needs of those struggling with trauma that has led to drug or alcohol addiction. If you or someone close to you is battling substance use disorder, call 833.793.0191 today to speak with our staff about our women’s trauma therapy program in Charleston, South Carolina.
Understanding Trauma-Informed Care for Women
Any event or circumstance that causes severe distress that overwhelms a person and makes it impossible to cope can be characterized as “traumatic.” Trauma can affect the emotional state of the affected individual and impede normal emotions and experiences. And in cases where the patient is consistently reminded of the traumatic event, it can lead to a serious dependence on drugs or alcohol as a means of coping with the trauma, impeding trauma recovery.
Trauma-informed care involves creating an environment in which patients feel safe to share their experiences without fear of judgment or being re-traumatized. In order to achieve this, treatment providers must be aware of the signs and symptoms of trauma so that they can properly address them.
For women, some of the signs that they may be struggling with trauma include:
- Persistent and intrusive memories of the event
- Recurrent nightmares
- Flashbacks
- Intense emotional reactions to anything that reminds them of the event
- Avoidance of anything that may trigger memories of the event
- A feeling of numbness or disconnection from others
- Hopelessness
- Anxiety
If you’re struggling with trauma, know that you’re not alone. Our women’s trauma treatment can help women struggling with trauma and related substance abuse find healing in a safe, peaceful environment.

The Prevalence of Trauma
Women often grapple with trauma specific to their gender, highlighting the need for trauma recovery programs designed for women specifically. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), women are significantly more likely – according to most studies more than twice as likely – to struggle with PTSD than men are. Many factors contribute to this phenomenon. Primary among them is the fact that women tend to experience different types of trauma than men; women are statistically far more likely to be sexually assaulted, raped, or sexually abused as children, for instance.
Broadly speaking, three types of trauma can affect people:
- Acute – a single traumatic event
- Chronic – trauma that is repeated over an extended period
- Complex – multiple traumatic events that are usually of an invasive, interpersonal nature
If you have experienced a traumatic event or series of events, it is important that you reach out for professional help. At Hammocks on the Edisto, our therapists work hard to create a welcoming and open space to talk about the circumstances that have led to your PTSD and accompanying addiction and to create a custom treatment plan specific to your needs that will help you begin the healing process.

How Our Women’s Traum Recovery Program Can Help
Trauma-informed care for women can help participants focus on the trauma causing their addiction through evidence-based therapy programs. The aim is to help you better understand the trauma you have undergone and how it has affected you, and in doing so, allow you to form healthy coping skills that do not involve drugs or alcohol. Some of the therapeutic approaches that will be a part of your trauma treatment program include:
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) – You will identify goals, examine cognitive distortions, and examine feelings and examine feelings and behaviors associated with the trauma.
- Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) – CPT is similar to CBT but more trauma-centric. CPT focuses on the traumatic event and the emotions that it produces. A therapist will help you process those feelings without the need for drugs and alcohol.
- Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT): This therapy focuses on mindfulness, distress tolerance, regulating emotions, and interpersonal skills. DBT works well in individual therapy and group therapy, giving you a chance to see how other women are coping with similar issues.

The most incredible treatment facility ever! They offer a holistic approach centered in therapy, science, and female empowerment. Eric, Sarah, Jonas, Katie, and all of the other staff offer a level of compassion that I’ve never seen before in any treatment facility. And that says a lot coming from a child of two addicts who have been in and out of facilities my entire life. They are always available and respond quickly to any questions or discussions you may bring up. The family groups were amazing and I miss them every week. They truly care and believe that recovery is possible for all!

My wife spent a month at the Hammocks and I have nothing but incredible things to say about the facility. The help and therapy she received has truly been life changing for our family. From the day I called to discuss admission, Jonas, the director, made himself immediately available to any questions or concerns I had. Throughout her stay, I participated in multiple family sessions a week with Sarah or Eric who were both excellent. They were kind and accepting, but also thought-provoking and challenging. Not to mention, the whole facility is absolutely beautiful. I would highly recommend the Hammocks to any family in need of a recovery center.

This facility has absolutely saved my life. It is secluded, peaceful, beautiful, and a lovely gone environment that makes external and internal healing much easier to tackle. Being away from family and doing the intense work needed for recovery is hard enough in any environment but the Hammocks makes you feel like you are nothing shy of family. You are treated with respect and kindness, and your needs are listened to and accommodated and the staff is so loving and supportive.
