Substance Abuse and Mental Health

Dual Diagnosis Treatment Center in South Carolina

Trauma is a known risk factor for substance abuse. Although not everyone who goes through trauma will develop a substance use disorder, trauma survivors experience drug and alcohol use disorders at higher rates compared to the general population. Research shows that getting help for addiction and PTSD at the same time is linked to better treatment outcomes, so looking for a dual-diagnosis center can be crucial for people who meet the criteria for both. As a dual diagnosis treatment center in South Carolina, Hammocks on the Edisto has a team of experts with ample experience in working with trauma and PTSD in women.

Treatment Can Make a Difference

Why Treatment For Women With PTSD Matters

Much like substance abuse, trauma and PTSD have the potential to interfere with all aspects of a person’s life. As for why treatment for women with PTSD matters, it is essential to highlight that there are effective treatments for PTSD and related disorders. When you get treatment for PTSD and addiction, you can:

  • Reduce symptom severity in PTSD, sometimes to the extent that you no longer meet the criteria for the disorder.
  • Overcome or reduce substance abuse behaviors.
  • Improve overall psychiatric functioning.
  • Achieve a better quality of life.
  • Build lasting recovery skills.

Getting help for addiction and co-occurring disorders like PTSD can also improve employment outcomes, reduce the risk of future hospitalizations, lower your risk of medication interactions resulting from substance abuse, and more. At Hammocks on the Edisto, we practice ethical, holistic care and believe in the importance of treating the whole person.

Possible Causes of PTSD in Women

Like anyone else, women can develop PTSD after any traumatic event. Possible causes of PTSD in women include but aren’t at all limited to the following:

  • Serious mental or physical illness in yourself or a close loved one.
  • Domestic violence and intimate partner violence.
  • Difficulty during pregnancy or childbirth.
  • The sudden death of a loved one.
  • Sexual assault and abuse.
  • Childhood abuse or neglect.
  • Medical trauma.
  • Natural disasters.
  • War.

Women may be more prone to certain traumatic events that can lead to PTSD. For example, women face a disproportionate risk of sexual assault and domestic violence compared to their male counterparts.

Symptoms of PTSD in Women

Learning more about PTSD can be helpful for individuals and families affected by the condition. The signs and symptoms of PTSD fall into four specific categories. For a diagnosis to occur, symptoms must last for one month or more. With that in mind, symptoms of PTSD in women may include but aren’t limited to the following.

  • Re-experiencing symptoms: Flashbacks, nightmares, distressing thoughts, or physical signs of distress. Thoughts, emotions, and external reminders of the event (e.g., objects, places) can all provoke these symptoms.
  • Avoidance symptoms: Avoiding external stimuli (e.g., people, places, or things) related to the event or avoiding internal exposure to the event (e.g., thoughts or feelings related to the event).
  • Arousal and reactivity symptoms: Being startled more easily than others, irritability or angry outbursts, trouble sleeping, engaging in destructive or risky behavior, or feeling tense, anxious, and on edge.
  • Cognition and mood symptoms: Depression, trouble remembering key features of the event, loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities, feelings of social isolation, difficulty experiencing positive emotions, ongoing negative emotions (e.g., anger, fear, guilt, shame, or disgust), negative thoughts about oneself or the world, or exaggerated feelings of blame toward oneself or others.

Among other criteria, people with PTSD must experience at least two re-experiencing symptoms, at least two mood and cognition symptoms, at least one avoidance symptom, and at least one arousal and reactivity symptom to be diagnosed with PTSD. We provide free intake evaluations at the start of treatment to help us better understand your symptoms and need for treatment.

Complex PTSD

Complex PTSD, which affects some survivors of prolonged, ongoing, or repeated trauma, can come with additional symptoms. For example, intensified difficulties with emotion regulation, interpersonal relationships, and sense of self. While complex PTSD is not yet a separate diagnosis (it is simply diagnosed as PTSD), it is recognized in the mental health field. If you are a woman with Complex-PTSD, Hammocks on the Edisto can help.

Is PTSD More Common in Women?

Yes. Currently, it is suggested that women who go through trauma are twice as likely to develop PTSD compared to men. Women have a 10-12 percent lifetime prevalence of PTSD, whereas men have a 5-6 percent lifetime prevalence of PTSD.

Women's Stories of Hope

The Hammocks is a wonderful and life changing place. Everyone working here is warm, welcoming, and helpful. The Clinical staff is truly exceptional. I am going home a mentally healthy person looking forward to a happy & meaningful life.

Alli O.

This facility is like no other. Every Staff member was knowledgeable and friendly. Being a small group (15 max), I formed a bond with the other residents like I had never experienced before. This place saved my life.

Jill J.

Hammocks is truly a special place. Everything from the staff, therapists, activities, food, location/view/house, resources etc. were top-notch. I had an incredible experience and highly recommend this spot. 10/10.

Darcy W.

The most incredible treatment facility ever! They offer a holistic approach centered in therapy, science, and female empowerment. Eric, Sarah, Jonas, Katie, and all of the other staff offer a level of compassion that I’ve never seen before in any treatment facility. And that says a lot coming from a child of two addicts who have been in and out of facilities my entire life. They are always available and respond quickly to any questions or discussions you may bring up. The family groups were amazing and I miss them every week. They truly care and believe that recovery is possible for all!

Rhapsody C.

My wife spent a month at the Hammocks and I have nothing but incredible things to say about the facility. The help and therapy she received has truly been life changing for our family. From the day I called to discuss admission, Jonas, the director, made himself immediately available to any questions or concerns I had. Throughout her stay, I participated in multiple family sessions a week with Sarah or Eric who were both excellent. They were kind and accepting, but also thought-provoking and challenging. Not to mention, the whole facility is absolutely beautiful. I would highly recommend the Hammocks to any family in need of a recovery center.

Erica U.

This facility has absolutely saved my life. It is secluded, peaceful, beautiful, and a lovely gone environment that makes external and internal healing much easier to tackle. Being away from family and doing the intense work needed for recovery is hard enough in any environment but the Hammocks makes you feel like you are nothing shy of family. You are treated with respect and kindness, and your needs are listened to and accommodated and the staff is so loving and supportive.

Krista B.

As a therapist at Hammocks on the Edisto, I am so proud to be a part of this great team of caring professionals. Being directly involved in the process of change for our clients is a honor. The facility is beautiful and inviting and provides a healthy environment for our residents to thrive. The programming is like nothing I’ve been part of before. From our comprehensive and diverse group sessions, the wellness and yoga component, our individual therapy, medical and nursing care, nutrition and on site chef, and a great team of recovery associates, we collectively provide a great recovery experience.

Eric H.

Hammocks on the Edisto is a dream come true in so many ways. This is a unique place where women can progress on their journey to recovery surrounded by the beauty of the South Carolina Lowcountry and supported by a team of compassionate expert providers. Offerings beyond talk therapy include yoga, cooking demonstrations, adventures to local parks and beaches, and wellness coaching. The facility is never over crowded and each woman gets lots of personalized care. The healing potential is felt as soon as you drive down the long private driveway to the house. Highly recommend.

Kate A.

I was able to rediscover myself and my inner light. It was diminished for too many years and Hammocks has helped me health from the inside out. I am prepared for my future and content with my recovery and life.

H. G.

My stay here at Hammocks has been life changing. I will never forget all of the staff and women here who have made my journey successful. Without all of you I would still be broken. Love to all.

Tracey

My time at the Hammocks was an absolute blessing and saved my life. This magical place on the water is beautiful, safe, and peaceful. I have made lifelong connections and relationships with all of the strong women I have met here. From the counselors and therapists, to the chef and housekeeping, Hammocks allowed me to really get vulnerable while making me feel right at home. I will always remember the amazing and calming energy, from the moment I walked through the door and will always utilize the life changing tools that were given to me during my stay. Hammocks has changed my outlook on life and has me excited to see what the future holds for my recovery!

O.F.

The Hammocks was transformative for me. It helped save my life. Their holistic approach to recovery addresses the mind, body and spirit. A variety of people that work there have experienced recovery, making them able to connect in ways others can't. It's truly a unique program.

Emily R.

I have been to other IP treatment facilities and the Hammocks is by far the best! The therapists are top notch and provide intensive treatment involving all aspects of mental health and addiction. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and the women have become like family.

Michele C.

Hammocks saved my life. This place, staff, and residents helped me heal, grow and I’ve seen a version of myself that i’ve never known. Thank you, always.

Danielle J.

Hammocks truly changed my life and my perspective on trauma and recovery. The therapists and groups were helpful like no other treatment center i’ve been to. Thank you Hammocks!

Caroline W.

The Hammocks not only saved my life, but taught me a new way to live. Emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually. I owe it all to the Hammocks facility and staff. I would recommend anyone to this special place

Lauren M.

I arrived to the Hammocks in a horrible depressive episode, bad relapse, and incredibly hopeless and suicidal. This place has given me space ot learn, grow, and be my authentic self. Thanks to the help of the staff, therapists, and fellow residents, I am leaving The Hammocks with a better relationship to myself, a desire to stay sober, and feeling hopeful for the first time in years. Thank you!

Clover D.

My friend told me about the Hammocks when i was unsure if inpatient treatment was fdor me. The thirty day stay was worth every minute! There was not one moment that i did not learn from during my HOTE journey and i am leaving here as a much stronger and healthier version of myself.

Morgan C.

I entered the big yellow door at the Hammocks on the Edisto not knowing what to expect and it has turned out to be a life changing experience. This place is special and unique, someplace i will never forget.

Adriana F.

Prior to comin got the Hammocks I was heavily using alcohol and THC. I was at the edge of death by my own hands. Since comin got the Hammocks I want to live. My individual mental health and substance abuse therapy sessions were aligned and tailored to my specific needs. The psyc ed classes that were most meaningful to me were Adverse Childhood Patterns, Empathy Vs. Sympathy, Adult Attachment Patterns, Mindfulness, Love Languages, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. The attended AA meetings offered insight to the 12 recovery steps endorsed by Alcoholics anonymous. When i first came to The Hammocks I was very weak and walked with little stability. Through yoga, riki, pound, and my favorite, watering and taking care of the gardens, I have regained my strength. I want alcohol and drugs to no longer be a part of my future, living a rich and fulfilling life.

Carol J. V.

My experience at Hammocks on the Edisto far exceeded my expectations. I came in doubting I coils change the negative patterns and behaviors that i’ve battled for years. At the end of my 30 day program I have hope and a solid plan of action. The Hammocks is a safe space for women to build connection and a sense of community. The beautiful setting, kind staff, skilled clinicians and program components develop self-awareness, the ability to identify and process trauma and gain knowledge to navigate recovery with confidence. It’s a very special place.
