Statistics on Bipolar Disorder and Addiction
Substance use disorders are highly prevalent in those with bipolar disorder. Statistics on bipolar disorder and addiction suggest that 56 percent of people with bipolar disorder will have a substance use disorder at some point in their life. This means that people with bipolar disorder are significantly more likely to develop a drug or alcohol use disorder compared to people without bipolar disorder. People with bipolar disorder may use substances for different reasons, such as to self-medicate or cope with mental health symptoms. Unfortunately, substances can worsen bipolar disorder symptoms. Research shows that co-occurring substance use disorders predict a more severe course of illness, increased hospitalization, and more relapses in individuals who have bipolar disorder.
Addressing dual-diagnosis concerns like bipolar disorder alongside addiction can improve treatment results for clients. Positive outcomes associated with treating co-occurring disorders include but are not limited to fewer hospitalizations, a lower likelihood of medication interactions, better psychiatric functioning, improved quality of life, and increased rates of successful recovery from or treatment of both disorders. Hammocks on the Edisto proudly offers dual-diagnosis South Carolina treatment for women with bipolar disorder.

Signs and Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder
The signs and symptoms of bipolar disorder can differ from person to person. However, bipolar disorder is always marked by alternating episodes of mania or hypomania (a lower-level form of mania) and depression, alongside other criteria.
During a manic episode, someone might experience symptoms such as:
- Increased or abnormally high energy levels.
- A decreased need for sleep (e.g., feeling rested after just a few hours of sleep).
- Impulsive or risky behavior (e.g., unsafe sex, driving after using drugs or alcohol).
- An increase in purposeless movements (e.g., pacing, fidgeting).
- Being obsessed with or absorbed in an activity or goal.
- Increased talkativeness or pressured speech.
- Being more easily distracted than usual.
- Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity.
- Euphoria or excitement.
- Anger or irritability.
- A flight of ideas.
To be diagnosed with bipolar I disorder, you must have had at least one full-blown manic episode. People with bipolar II disorder, on the other hand, must have had at least one hypomanic episode and must not have had a full-blown manic episode.
During a depressive episode, someone might experience symptoms such as:
- A down, low, or depressed mood.
- Feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, or guilt.
- Slowed psychomotor activity (body movements).
- A lack of interest in activities they’d typically enjoy or find important.
- Sleeping too much (hypersomnia) or too little (insomnia).
- Emotional numbness or excessive crying.
- Thoughts of suicide or self-harm.
- Changes in appetite.
- Irritability.
Qualified healthcare providers can diagnose bipolar disorder. Hammocks on the Edisto provides free evaluations for addiction and mental health.

Understanding Bipolar Disorder
Risk Factors for Bipolar Disorder
The exact cause of bipolar disorder is unknown, but some factors can raise the probability that a person will have the condition. Possible risk factors for bipolar disorder include:
- Family history and genetics. People who have a close relative with bipolar disorder (e.g., a parent or both parents) are more likely to have bipolar disorder themselves.
- Trauma. Trauma and stress can exacerbate bipolar disorder symptoms, and people who have been through traumatic events are more likely to have bipolar disorder.
- Brain differences. Research has found some brain differences in people with bipolar disorder. Specifically, abnormalities in the structure and function of key emotional control networks have been noted.
Our treatment center for women takes a comprehensive and trauma-informed approach that incorporates every aspect of your experience. We will help you find the treatments and strategies that work for you regardless of the cause.

This facility is like no other. Every Staff member was knowledgeable and friendly. Being a small group (15 max), I formed a bond with the other residents like I had never experienced before. This place saved my life.

Hammocks is truly a special place. Everything from the staff, therapists, activities, food, location/view/house, resources etc. were top-notch. I had an incredible experience and highly recommend this spot. 10/10.
Darcy W.
The most incredible treatment facility ever! They offer a holistic approach centered in therapy, science, and female empowerment. Eric, Sarah, Jonas, Katie, and all of the other staff offer a level of compassion that I’ve never seen before in any treatment facility. And that says a lot coming from a child of two addicts who have been in and out of facilities my entire life. They are always available and respond quickly to any questions or discussions you may bring up. The family groups were amazing and I miss them every week. They truly care and believe that recovery is possible for all!
Rhapsody C.
My wife spent a month at the Hammocks and I have nothing but incredible things to say about the facility. The help and therapy she received has truly been life changing for our family. From the day I called to discuss admission, Jonas, the director, made himself immediately available to any questions or concerns I had. Throughout her stay, I participated in multiple family sessions a week with Sarah or Eric who were both excellent. They were kind and accepting, but also thought-provoking and challenging. Not to mention, the whole facility is absolutely beautiful. I would highly recommend the Hammocks to any family in need of a recovery center.
Erica U.
This facility has absolutely saved my life. It is secluded, peaceful, beautiful, and a lovely gone environment that makes external and internal healing much easier to tackle. Being away from family and doing the intense work needed for recovery is hard enough in any environment but the Hammocks makes you feel like you are nothing shy of family. You are treated with respect and kindness, and your needs are listened to and accommodated and the staff is so loving and supportive.

As a therapist at Hammocks on the Edisto, I am so proud to be a part of this great team of caring professionals. Being directly involved in the process of change for our clients is a honor. The facility is beautiful and inviting and provides a healthy environment for our residents to thrive. The programming is like nothing I’ve been part of before. From our comprehensive and diverse group sessions, the wellness and yoga component, our individual therapy, medical and nursing care, nutrition and on site chef, and a great team of recovery associates, we collectively provide a great recovery experience.

This is a unique place where women can progress on their journey to recovery surrounded by the beauty of the South Carolina Lowcountry and supported by a team of compassionate expert providers. My time at the Hammocks was an absolute blessing and saved my life. This magical place on the water is beautiful, safe, and peaceful.
